Life (the swamp) is a struggle. Though difficult at times, life's struggles ultimately lead to a greater existence. These struggles do not leave us hopeless nor disheartened, but result in accomplishment. They are the foundation for new life, growth, and progression within individuals who encounter extreme or harsh struggles.

The theme in Mary Oliver's poem "Aunt Leaf" is the cycle of life and nature's ability to continually renew itself. The poem explores the idea that life is transient and constantly changing, just like the falling leaves. Oliver celebrates the beauty and acceptance of this natural process through the metaphor of Aunt Leaf's graceful surrender to the changing seasons.
To get life, you first have to get swamp and energy. To get swamp, combine water and soil. To get energy, combine air and fire. Then combine swamp and energy and you are all good.
