When the author of Matthew's Gospel copied source material from Mark's Gospel, he included almost everything in that earlier version. Some 600 verses of the 666 verses in Mark can be found in Matthew, and even the wording is generally identical in the original Greek language.
However, Matthew does change some of the details, particularly when the author believed that Mark must have been wrong. For example, Mark has Jesus cross the Sea of Galilee to the land of the Gerasenes*. The town of Gerasa is shown as several kilometres from the shore and across a river, so this location was changed in Matthew to 'Gadarenes'.
In the story of the women arriving at the tomb early on Sunday, Matthew omits the passages about the stone already having been moved and of the young man inside the tomb, who told the women that Jesus was risen, and they fled in terror, telling no one. This is replaced by a story of an angel coming down and moving the stone with an earthquake, and the angel sitting outside on the stone to tell the women that Jesus was risen. In most cases, where Matthew differs from this source material, it is usually because its author corrected what he thought to be an error, or in order to provide an more awe-inspiring alternative.
Matthew also omits some additional material in Luke, which was written at least a decade later and was therefore unknown to the author of Matthew, and changes made by the author of John.

* The translators of the King James Version (KJV) also recognised this error and has 'Gadarenes' in Mark, but other Bibles, such as the New American Bible (NAB) have retained the original, 'Gerasenes'.
