What does Zechariah chapter 2 mean?

OpinionThe Book of Zechariah is thought to have three authors, known today as First Zechariah, Second Zechariah and Third Zechariah. Chapter 13 is material written by Third Zechariah, probably around 250 BCE. The chapter is a polemic against those who still practised the old, polytheistic religion of Judah. Chapters 1 and 2 make it clear that unwelcome religious practices occurred in Jerusalem and that the Lord of Hosts will remove the idols from the land and banish their prophets. The chapter then encourages violent attacks on those who worship them.

OpinionThe prophet Zechariah was speaking prophetically of the Messiah's wounds and the violence wrought against him, of his redemptive work, the destruction of the nation of Israel, and the purification of a remnant.

Then he sees a man (an angel) measuring the city of Jerusalem, prophesying that in the future time, Jerusalem will expand and will not need walls, since God will protect her.

He then calls upon the Jews living in the northern lands to gather into Israel, since God will bring wrath upon those who have persecuted the Jews. At that time God's presence will dwell in Israel and many peoples will come to recognize Him.

As is a central promise from God to His House of Israel - all - Zechariah's vision here in Chapter 2 concerning the 'surveyor' represents God's promise that Jerusalem will be fully expanded and its people will one day in the not to distant future, live in complete safety while the Lord judges Israel's enemies. This will occur during the Millennial Rule of Christ.
