What does a person need to do to gain salvation?

Believe in God and do his will. If you truly believe in the Lord you will do all things that please him. A person's faith is a journey where more is learned when one wishes to get closer to the Lord. Jesus told his disciples that anyone who mentioned his name on Earth, he would mention that person to the Father. Jesus said you must believe in him as the Son sent by the Father and that no one goes to the Father except through him. Forgive others who sin against you and ask forgiveness for the sins that you have committed.

You have to admit that you are a sinner, and repent of your sins. You have to believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose from the dead. And receive Jesus as your Lord and personal Savior.

You have to have heard the Gospel. That Jesus Christ is the Son of God, born of a Virgin, 2000 years ago in Israel, Lived a sinless life, Died on the cross for mankind's sin, was buried, and 3 days later rose from the dead, appeared to his followers, then ascended up to heaven to sit on the right hand of the Father, and He will come again. That this Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was sent to Earth with the purpose of dying for man's sin, and that this Jesus Christ will save your soul if you pray to him confessing that you are a sinner in need of Him as your Lord and Saviour. This you must know have heard or learned from hearing it from another believer or through reading about it. Once you have this knowledge, you must be convicted by the Holy Spirit. What this means is that you become aware (you believe it) that you are a lost sinner, on your way to Hell. And only Jesus Christ can save your soul from hell, and forgive you of your sins, and grant you eternal life with Him. Once you come to this conviction, which can only be given you by God, if you are convicted of this fact, it is because God is at work on your heart, then there remains only one thing. You must pray to God. You tell Him that you know that you are a sinner that is lost, and on your way to hell, and that you want to be saved from this judgement. You tell God that you believe that only Jesus Christ, the Son of God can save you from hell. Ask God to forgive you of your sins, and that you repent (you turn away from your sinful ways), and ask Jesus Christ Himself to come in your heart and be your Lord and Saviour of your soul and your life. Then thank Jesus Christ for saving your soul, as He promises to do so to all who cry out to him for salvation in sincerity. If you believe what you just prayed, if you mean it, then you are now saved, as is promised according to the Word of God. You are now Spiritually "born again", you now have a new nature inside you that you must nurture and allow to grow, you have God Himself now, in the Person of the Holy Spirit, that now resides within you and keeps you, as you are now God's child, and God is now your Father. That's it. Anyone who proceeds as before mentioned, with sincerity, and believing, will be awarded with forgiveness of sins, and eternal life. That is just the beginning of a brand new and changed life, one which you'll never be the same from that moment forth.

The New Testament speaks of several elements that are necessary for one to be saved, and a tremendous amount of false doctrine arises when any elements are considered sufficient to the exclusion of others. Hebrews 11:6 says, "But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." Diligently seeking the answer to your question from scripture reveals the following: (1) One must hear and believe (have faith in) the gospel (John 5:24), understanding that all are guilty of sin (Romans 3:23), and that Jesus died to make atonement for mankind's sins and rose again to eternal life (1 Corinthians 15:3, 4). [A full knowledge of the "how" and "why" is not necessary to be saved; only the conviction that one needs the forgiveness that Jesus provides. After obeying the gospel, one should learn all they can about what God expects of them as His children. In the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19, 20), Jesus commands His apostles to make disciples, then teach them all they need to know.] John 1:12 - But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: (Note from John 1:12 that belief gives one the right to become a child of God. Scripture speaks of all the elements as necessary for salvation, and they are complementary, not contradictory.
