It can mean to carry something out (Esther 9:1 - "and his decree drew near to be put in execution", that is, the decree was to be carried out).

It can also mean that the death penalty is applied to a convicted criminal. Mark 6:27 mentions an "executioner", the person in charge of killing the prisoner, but it doesn't mention the word "execution" directly.

Similarly with the variation "execute"; The Bible verses which I found for this word seem to use the word in the sense of "carrying out" or "doing" something.
