Forgiveness is like freedom; it's not free either. It costs. The cost, the price for God's forgiveness of mankind's sin is the life of Jesus Christ. It cost Him everything He had. Opening the way for God to forgive mankind's sin is what Jesus dying on the cross is all about. In the Lord's Prayer, supplicants are instructed to pray, "Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors." This makes the forgiveness which the supplicant receives dependent on the forgiveness which the supplicant imparts. The idea is, if God gave His life to forgive mankind (Acts 28:20), and all moral accounts are settled in the blood of Jesus (John 19:30, Romans 5:10, 11), then followers of God should not shirk from forgiving others, regardless of the cost to them personally. (At the same time, there is also in scripture the notion that God is careful for the welfare of His followers. He is not slack in dispensing vengeance and judgement [often more severe than anyone might have imagined] on those who maliciously mistreat and abuse His own.)
