The expression to "cry wolf" means to claim something is true when it isn't, (like a false alarm) and it comes from an Aesop's fable about a shepherd boy. Bored, he would yell "Wolf!" so that everyone would help him defend the sheep against the predator. Only there was no wolf. He repeated this several times, until finally when a wolf did come, no one believed him--and so no one came to help.
