The word 'mansions' appears only once in the KJV Bible, (John 14.2), and means, 'a large stately house'.
Answer:
The word translated in the KJV "mansions" in John 14:2, was inspired "twice" -- once more in verse 23:
"...if a man love Me, he will keep My Words: and My Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our ABODE with him." (John 14:23)
The "inspired" word is "MONE": "...a staying, i.e. residence (the act or the place):
KJV-- abode, mansion." (Strong's Definitions)
The Literal Bible translates these passages:
(verse 2): "In the house of the Father of me places to stay many are, Otherwise I would have told - you."
(verse 23): "...If anyone loves me, the word of me he will keep, and the Father of me will love him, and to him will he come, and a home with him we will make."
Jesus references "His Father's House"... to "the Temple" that stood in the days of His flesh.
"...Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And found in the Templethose that sold oxen and sheep and doves... Take these things hence; make not MY FATHER'S HOUSE an house of merchandise." (John 2:16)
The Temple... patterned after His Father's House... had "many mansions." It had many "places to stay" for those whom God employed for it's operation and function.
"...I brought them into the House of the Lord, into the chamber [mansion] of the sons of Hanan... which was by the chamber [mansion] of the princes, which was above the chamber [mansion] of Maaseiah... the keeper of the door..." (Jer.35:4).
Jesus' mention of these "mansions" to His disciples was telling them that they would be an integral part in the future operation and function of the Kingdom [House] of God when He establishes it on earth:
"...I go to PREPARE A PLACE FOR YOU. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there ye may be also." (John 14:2-3)
Jesus is talking about training those who belong to His Father CO-RULING the Kingdom of God WITH HIM over the mortal nations of the earth for a thousand years, when the time comes.
"And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and WE SHALL REIGN ON THE EARTH." (Rev.5:10)
"...in the regeneration when the Son of Man shall sit in the throne of His Glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, Judging the twelve tribes of Israel." (Matt.19:28)
"...the Ancient of Days came, and Judgment was given to the saints of the Most High..." (Dan.7:22).
"Do ye not know that the saints shall JUDGE THE WORLD?..." (I Cor.6:2).
"...and the time came that the saints POSSESSED THE KINGDOM." (Dan.7:22)
The "mansions" of The Bible are much more than mere "big houses in heaven"... as many people today imagine them to be. The "mansions" Jesus is preparing for His servants are "offices and postitions of authority" -- "sovereign rulership" over the remnant nations of men, that survive the coming Great Tribulation when Jesus returns.
"Then shall the King say unto them on His right hand, Come, ye blessed of My Father, INHERIT THE KINGDOM prepared for you from the foundation of the world." (Matt. 25:34)
"...he that overcometh, and keepeth My Works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: and he shall RULE THEM WITH A ROD OF IRON..." (Rev.2:26-27).
The world has little or no understanding of what's coming on the world... or what the Bible means by "mansions" being prepared by Jesus in heaven... nor of their impact on the world once their residents take possession of them.
