Chapters 5,6, & 7 are all part of the Sermon on the Mount and are vital to be read together to get the full thrust of what Jesus was instructing.

Specifically, after outlining points on searching for the truth, judging others, and explaining the path to Eternal life is on a narrow and less travelled path, Chapter 7 is trying to explain to many who call themselves 'Christians' or followers of Christ, do not fully adhere to His example and do what He told all to do.

Today, many become more concerned with finding a Church which conforms to their ideas of right/wrong and their Commandments to follow rather than reading and doing what Christ Himself, said and done. This is the wide path approach.

Consider the individual who has done something wrong or continues doing sinful acts. This person feels guilt and goes to Church A but they will not accept him unless he confesses his sins and tries to change. He feels ashamed to let others know his faults so refuses. Eventually he finds a Church that will accept him with no or few questions asked. He plants himself and begins to grow in their ideas of Christianity - which usually does not follow at least 1 of the Commandments and as James 2:10 says, break 1 and you break them all. So at his judgment before Christ, he will be told the truth that he worshipped Him or did mighty things in His name by his standards and not Gods. Therefore, Jesus will dismiss him as never knowing him (John 14:21).

Jesus never told anyone that following Him would be a cake walk. Rather He says several times that as the world hated Him and sought to kill Him, so it will do until the end to any who chose to follow Him. This is the narrow or less travelled path.

Christ is our perfect example. The Rock or foundation for all who wish to build upon it with & through His FAITH.
