Religion has alot to do with anything. If you think about it, who could have made the world and people? Even today people can't discover how to make a human being by hand, or explain how the world started. Religion teaches you life from the beginning to the end.
Regardless of the truth (or lack of truth) regarding the claims of the various religions, religion has a huge impact on society. Religion is often used as a tool to motivate believers to actions they otherwise never would have considered. It is the single most divisive force in modern culture, and one would be foolish to ignore the huge economic and political power that religious organizations wield.
Additionally, as illustrated by the above er, religion often offers easy s to difficult questions. This has a harmful side-effect in that people who think they have a bullet-proof on an issue stop investigating the issue altogether and as a result often discount or devalue s (or theories) which may have a much stronger body of evidence behind them.
This is not to say that religion does not have a positive impact. Indeed many theists have used their faith to benefit themselves and others greatly. Most charitable organizations have their roots in religious movements.
