After the Crucifixion, Christ's apostles went into hiding until the Pentacost at which time the house was filled with a "great wind and noise." They were gifted with the ability to speak multiple languages and go forth to spread Christ's message of loving sacrifice.

The New Testament is largely comprised of letters of advice written by an Apostle to converts in an area where they'd evangelized (i.e. Corinth). Most of the original Apostles were killed for preaching (evangelizing) heresy.

It should be noted that the Apostles were not recorded as having forced their beliefs on anyone, instead only offering testament to Christ's miracles, kindness and message of redemption.
