Shamash (שמש) refers to s specific type of employee in a synagogue that assists with the running of the synagogue. In modern times, this role is more commonly called a gabbai and is close in function to the Christian term "beadle."
The word Shamash more commonly refers to the helper candle used on a Hanukkiyah (Hanukkah menorah).
