The account in Matthew states:

Matthew 17:9

New English Translation (NET)

9 As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, "Do not tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man is raised from the dead."

So the disciples saw a vision of the future, not something that was actually happening in their time. The transfiguration gave Peter, James and John a partial vision of the Kingdom of God as if it were truly there. Jesus alluded to these three when He said to the crowd that include Peter, James, and John:

Luke 9:27

New English Translation (NET)

27 But I tell you most certainly, there are some standing here who will not experience death before they see the kingdom of God."

Since all mankind has lived and died in the past in the almost 2000 years since Jesus made this statement, His statement above in Luke was fulfilled when three of His apostles witnessed the transfiguration on the mount, a vision of that same Kingdom.
