Jesus, though not mentioned by name, is part of the first Gospel promise on Genesis 3:15 as a remedy for the sin which the serpent had led the first humans into. As the savior, He would be the one to bruise the head of the serpent, signifying the ultimate victory over sin which He would bring through His death and glorious resurrection.

No, there is no prophecy of Jesus in the book of Genesis. However, Burton L Mack (Who Wrote the New Testament) describes a trick wherein one can ask any question of The Bible and get some kind of answer, then if the first answer does not appear to be helpful, one looks for another answer to the same question, until the right answer appears. With a little ingenuity, one can set up the comparison again with other emphases and make the answer come out right. In this way, it really is possible to point to prophecies of Jesus in the Book of Genesis.

One example of the use of this technique is to find a prophecy of Jesus in Genesis 3:15: "And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. " Here, God was talking of the punishment the serpent would endure, yet some pious Christians see it as a reference to Jesus.

• This was afterwards more clearly revealed by Isaiah 7:14 ("Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel"). This was fulfilled in Jesus, who was truly the seed of the woman and of her only, being made of a woman and not begotten by man. He was conceived in the womb of the virgin by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Genesis has absolutely nothing to say about Jesus. He is not present in the book as a character in the narrative; he is not alluded to in any commentary or conversation within the narrative; and none of the core concepts associated with Jesus come up in Genesis.

As for Answer 1, Genesis 3:15 and Isaiah 7:14 must be read in context. As concerns Genesis 3:15, the actual verse is: "And I will put enmity between you [the snake] and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; it will strike at your head and you will strike at its heel." This is a statement concerning the reversal of the dominance that the snake in the Garden of Eden had over Eve. It also says nothing about the seed of woman not also being the seed of man. Therefore, it has no Messianic meaning, save that which is injected post-facto. As concerns Isaiah 7:14, this is an in-context prophecy. Reading Isaiah 7-10, Isaiah tells King Ahaz that the Syrian armies will no longer be a threat by the time a young woman gives birth to a son named Immanuel and the young woman does give birth to a son named Immanuel and this coincides with the collapse of the invading Syrian armies. Again, this has nothing to do with Messianic prophecy, save that which is injected post-facto.

This could just as easily be a prediction of World War II, with the army overthrowing Adolf Hitler (the serpent's head) and Mussolini (the serpent's tail). Of course, Genesis 3:15 is not really about Hitler and Mussolini any more than it is about Jesus, but this example shows how easy it is to 'find' whatever you want in the scriptures. Read literally, Jesus is not mentioned in the Book of Genesis, nor anywhere in the Old Testament.
