The different colours represent different liturgical seasons the church moves through during the year.
White/Gold - purity, light, glory - Easter and Christmas
Purple - solemnity, preparation - lent and advent
Red - solemnity - Good Friday, feast days
Green - worn during ordinary time which is basically everything between the above
