Labor not for the meat that perishes is referring to working for earthly goods that will someday pass away. Instead we should invest our lives in the eternal things of God.

Answer:

Jesus told it to the crowd of 5000 men (plus women and children) that He fed the barley loaves and fish in John 6. Afterwards. He was weak and tired and sought to escape the crowds and crossed the sea into Capernaum where He lived. The crowd tracked Him down, however... and assayed to elicit another "free meal" out of Him.

"...Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek Me, not because you saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for the meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for Him hath God the Father sealed."

As with many things Jesus spoke, a dual meaning hid within.

One of the types of "meat" of which He spoke was of faith in His "flesh" that would be sacrificed for their sakes.

The other "meat" is the counterpart of the "meat" they had eaten the day before - the loaves of bread that filled them. That counterpart is the Word of God, The Bible.

"...know that man doth not live by bread only, but by EVERY WORD that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live." (Deut.8:3)

God's Word is the Bread of Life. It's "spiritual nourishment" for the heart and converted mind (spirit, intellect) to grow and develop in Godly character toward becoming a Child of God.

"...If ye continue in My Word, then are ye My disciples indeed; and ye shall know the Truth, and the Truth will make you free." (John 8:31-32)

The physical bread man eats avails him not in the end, and he dies.

"...Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man might eat thereof, and not die. I AM THE LIVING BREAD which came down from heaven: IF ANY MAN EAT OF THIS BREAD, HE SHALL LIVE FOREVER: and the bread that I will give is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." (John 6:49-51)

God's Word is worthy of our time and study (our labour)... it leads to eternal life.

"Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me." (John 5:39)
