In Mark 5:11, an improbably large herd of 2000 swine (pigs) was grazing on the mountains near the lake until Jesus caused them to run down a steep slope into the Sea, where they drowned. This herd provided the opportunity for Jesus to cast the legion of demons out of the possessed man, and for the author of Mark to paint a vivid picture of just how many demons there were. This story is also found in Matthew and Luke.
