Gen:2:17: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Philisophically speaking it would appear that by eating from the tree we become aware of the existence of good and evil. Once we have become aware of this we are no longer innocent and subject to punishment.

Here is a cartoon example:

Wiley Coyote chases the Road Runner off a cliff. Wiley doesn't fall until he looks down. i.e. He is not subject to the consequence of his action until he becomes aware of his violation of the rules.

With good and evil we apparently cannot commit evil or good unless we are aware of it (e.g. They are subjective concepts).

Once Adam and Eve ate of the tree they were now bound to the consequences of good and evil and thus their first punishments were exile from Eden and mortality.

Expanded Explaination (Within Theological Tennants) of Historical Biblical Christianity

When they eat of that tree, they will die. And they did spiritually.

They were eternal creatures, they lost that, and now each day they are closer to their death. Death eventual, which they passed on to the entire human race, was the consequence of eating of this specific tree that was prohibited.

However, it does more importantly mean more than this. Death in The Bible always means separation, which makes sense. You die in this life, you become separated from the land of the living. They cant reach you anymore, and you cant reach them anymore. Well, that is what happened to man spiritually when they ate from that tree. Man, spiritually died. That is, mans spirit become forever disconnected from God.

The connection was forever severed, which eventually results in the physical death of man, but even worst, leaves mans eternal fate at great peril! THis heritage of spiritual and physical death is what is passed down to every human being since Adam. THis is why Christ came to die for our sins, to repair the breach for all that believe, that man might regain the image of God which he lost when Adam sinned by eating of that forbidden tree.

What does this quote mean-but of the tree of knowledge of good and evil thou shalt not eat of it for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die?

The quote is taken from Genesis, the first book of the Holy Bible, in which God gives mankind, i.e. Adam and Eve, domination over every living thing on, and Earth itself. The one forbidden item is the fruit of one tree in the Garden of Eden, and the couple are told specifically not to partake of it. When they do, they lose everything, are sent out of the Garden, and spend the rest of their lives working to survive, like every other creature. And, they learn about good and evil and worse-yet, have to choose between the two, which many might consider a form of death.
