At a Hindu temple (or mandir) we first wash our hands and feet as to cleanse ourselves and then that we take off our footwear outside the temple. Then only do we enter the temple. We ring the bell so that our prayers may be heard and then fold our hands in front of the deity and pray. Our prayers and worship methods are god-specific like we offer milk (pour it on the deity) to Lord Shiva, offer Oil (pour it on the deity) to Lord Shani, laddus (a type of sweet in the shape of a small ping pong ball) to Lord Ganesha. After that the pundit (godman) puts tikka (a paste of herbs like sandalwood) on our forehead and gives us prasad (some eatables which are blessings of the lord).

You need not give offerings to the lord as it is no compulsion you can just go fold your hands pray in front of the lord receive prasad from the pundit and leave with a peaceful soul.

They start by taking there shoes off and washing there hands. Then they go up to the holy statues and give there offerings of sweets/flowers/small change. They then put there hands together in the praying position and pray. This is often then followed by touching the feet of the gods statue and the priest's for blessing. Then they take a little of the offerings and share it which is called prashad.

If facility is there, one has to wash hands and feet also before entering the temple. After entering the temple, one does what is called 'Sashtanga namaskara', a complete bowing down before the 'Dwaja sthambha', the temple flag-pole. After this, one performs 3 pradakshina (encircle the holy shrine 3 times) and then enter the inner sanctorum. How one worships inside the sanctorum varies according to the choice of the devotee. At the minimum, one gets 'darshan' of the lord (gets a gaze of the lord (Idol installed in the sanctum sanctorum)), listens to the sound of the bell, utters prayers that he knows in a whispering tone, and submits his / her wish if any. If any seva (service) is going on, one witnesses the seva and then receives the holy water and any holy eatables (Prasada), and comes out, sits for some time contemplating the Darshan s/he has had and leaves the temple with a fulfilled mind.
