In the past twenty centuries, more than one group has been excommunicated from the Catholic Church (there is no "Roman" Catholic Church, that is a slur invented in England after the protestant revolt). You would have to specify a time period to get a more precise answer.

Who excommunicated the orthadox church?

Before protestants there were was one major christian church. It was just called The Church. Within that church there were 7 different branches (the biggest being Rome) that believed the same just different traditions and language. At the head of each of these branches was a group of bishops. Once or twice a year all the bishops of the different branches discussed religious matters about the church. But Rome was basically the highest of the 7. As time went on the Roman bishops wanted only one leader to lead the whole group that could communicate to God for them. The church closest to Rome was Constantinople. So Constantinople was the first to hear about there change. Constantinople excommunicated the Roman Church and the Roman church excommunicated Constantinople. So then there was just 5 churches. When the remaining 5 churches got word of what went on they brought back in the Constantinople church and they became the Orthodox church. And the Roman church turned into the Catholic church. So basically neither of us were really excommunicated but most people call this the first schism. and the second schism being the protestant. but looking at this subject there are many differant opinions

Is the Roman Catholic a break away group from the original Catholic?

No, The Roman Catholic Church is the original Catholic Church. The Orthodox Church is not a "break-away" church. The only churches that broke away are the "Protestant" Churches. God be with you! If by 'original Catholic' you mean the original church founded by Jesus Christ and His Apostles, then most certainly yes, although there are some common beliefs.

What is the difference between romaan Catholic and Catholic?

Well, "catholic" spelled with a lower-case "c", is a word meaning, "all-inclusive". It is not necessarily a religious word, at all. Roman Catholic is a Christian religion, and the word, "Catholic" is a religious word meaning, "all-inclusive" or "available to all". There are 2 Catholic churches. The church in Roman-held areas was a rival to the church in areas of what is now Turkey. The head of that church was in Byzantium. Eventually, the 2 church group broke apart, one being called the Roman Catholic church, and the other being called the Byzantine Catholic church. The Byzantine Catholic church is today better know as the Greek Orthodox church and Russian Orthodox church. Thus church follows the old, old practices that the Roman Catholic church has abandoned or altered over the years.
