Although Jesus was born in Bethlehem, he grew up with his parents in Nazareth.

When he was only twelve years old, he began visiting the temple and asking

questions of the erudite elders there, who were amazed at the depth of his

enlightenment. He made a practice of this and gained much wisdom.

Once he wandered away from his parents, and they were surprised to find him

conversing with great insight with the highly educated scholars there. Jesus

knew at an early age where his path would lead.

There is still some debate as to whether the village of Nazareth actually existed in Jesus' time. Assuming that Nazareth did exist at the time of Jesus, early in the first century, it would have been a poor rural village, where animal husbandry was the main industry. The gospels say that Joseph was the village carpenter.

Wikipedia describes the state of Archaeology in Nazareth, indicating that no worthwhile evidence of a settlement has yet been found from the time of Jesus. Nevertheless, we may assume that Nazareth was a small hamlet that could scarcely support a village carpenter in absolute poverty, as implied by Luke's Gospel, which says that after the birth of Jesus they sacrificed two turtledoves, a concession for the very poor in Jewish society. Joseph would somehow have supported Jesus and his brothers and sisters on his meagre income, and no doubt the boys had to do whatever gainful work that could be found for them.

Some say that Nazareth may not even have existed until long after his childhood. They say that Josephus never mentioned Nazareth, although he mentions almost every other town and village in Galilee, a district he knew well. The town certainly existed by around 80 CE, since it is mentioned several times in Matthew's Gospel, which most New Testament scholars now date to the 80s of the first century.

Whether Nazareth existed before 70 CE, when Mark's Gospel was written, is less certain. In the original Greek language, this Gospel contains only one disputed reference to Nazareth. In some English translations, Mark refers to Jesus of (or from) Nazareth five times (Mark 1:9,24; 10:47; 14:67; 16:6). However, in the original Greek, four of these references actually refer to Jesus the Nazarene (Ναζαρηνοῦ). Now, calling someone a Nazarene could arguably mean that he is from the town of Nazareth, but also there was a sect known as the Nazarenes and this could also have meant that Jesus was a leader of the Nazarene sect rather than a resident of Nazareth..

Some modern Bibles translate Mark 2:1,15 such as to suggest that Capernaum was really the home town of Jesus:

This means that it is not entirely certain that Jesus actually lived in Nazareth as a child.
