What if God exists but is deliberately confusing us just so he can put us into hell?

A glib perspective:

He wouldn't be a very nice person then.

The Calvinist perspective:

The question is at least hinting at some truth. All men and women are hopelessly depraved and utterly guilty of sin; guilty enough to conclude that we all truly deserve,regardless of any other considerations, an eternity in hell. So he doesn't even have to confuse us in order to send us there. In fact, he must actively give faith to anyone if they are going to escape hell. And the truth is (from a Calvinist perspective) that he gives faith to those he chooses, and he withholds it from whom he will. Our acts have nothing at all to do with it, since while we are in sin no acts that we do can bring about our salvation. It is by faith and not by acts that people are saved. This argument makes it possible to conclude that no one no matter how good or bad they were or appeared to be will get anything less than what is fully deserved, that is, justice. Some, those chosen by the deity, will enjoy his mercy.

It is difficult to escape this perspective, unless you hold that the deity can actually be surprised by the actions of people, swayed by their will, and that people, while in sin, can actually do something to affect their own salvation. The deity would find some people in heaven whom he doubted could make it, and he would find some people in hell he was really rooting for. These ideas would not generally go down well with most Christians. God will not be surprised and therefore election is set from eternal ages past, or God can be surprised, and sinners can perform acts that make them worthy of salvation, regardless of God's opinion, knowledge and will.

This is not a matter of confusion that can ever be cleared up with logic. The truth is that there are scriptural/theological realities that must be taken on faith, because logic and simplicity will fail. They must be taken on faith, or abandoned as untenable, but there are parts of theology that are confusing; no thinking person can deny that.

A secular perspective:

Let's accept the following as given: God exists and is omnipotent. There is a hell, which is a place of eternal torment that humans will go to if they do not follow God's instructions for salvation.

Accepting all of that, consider what one would expect to happen if God also loves humanity. One might think that God would make it excruciatingly clear how to avoid going to hell. What would the religions of the world look like if God's message had been excruciatingly clear? There would be a lot fewer religions, a lot fewer factions. In fact, if God's message was perfectly clear, then one might even expect there to be only one religion. Indeed, the scientific community looks a lot like what one might expect if everyone had the same reliable information and the same reliable intellectual tools: there is certainly controversy, and sometimes big surprises, but also obvious movement toward better and better understanding, and widespread consensus on the biggest issues. If God loved us, then one might expect the religions of the world to look a lot more unified even than the scientific community. One might expect widespread consensus on how salvation is to be brought about.

Considering that God, being omnipotent, could have given us clear instructions but did not, left it to our own interpretation and guesswork, even to the point that the sincerest of lifelong seekers can end up with flatly opposing views, strongly suggests that God hates us. Consider that there are over a billion Christians in the world, most proclaiming that Jesus is the Son of God and believing so is the only way into heaven, while there are some billion Muslims in the world, all proclaiming that Jesus was simply a man, and not to be worshiped. God has treated at least one of these groups most hatefully.
