Catholic AnswerNormally the word "saint" is used to refer to someone in heaven. For instance, we refer to St. Gabriel, the archangel who announced the incarnation to the Mary in the beginning of the Gospel according to St. Luke. Anyone who leads an outstanding life of Christian virtue, dies, and goes directly to heaven, may be submitted to the Holy See for investigation. If Rome can prove two miracles through that person's intercession, they are formally acclaimed a "saint."
