What is Deism?

A deist is one who believes in (or is willing to entertain the idea of a) God, but generally rejects the God/Gods/Goddesses portrayed by all of the world's religions. Most deists are agnostics (or even atheists) who feel they cannot reveal their actual beliefs (this was especially true of deists in the 18-19th centuries who lived in cultures/communities still greatly dominated by the Church)

Deism is the belief that God created everything, and then left us alone, and is not a part of our daily lives in so far as he/she doesn't care about us from day to day and assumes no control over life, exerts no influence on natural phenomena, and gives no supernatural revelation. Deism (i/ˈdiː.ɪzəm/[1][2]or /ˈdeɪ.ɪzəm/) is a philosophy which holds that reason and observation of the natural world, without the need for organized religion, can determine that the universe is the product of a creator. According to deists, God never intervenes in human affairs or suspends the natural laws of the universe. Deists typically reject supernatural events such as prophecy and miracles, tending instead to assert that a god (or "the Supreme Architect") does not alter the universe by intervening in it. This idea is also known as the clockwork universe theory, in which a god designs and builds the universe, but steps aside to let it run on its own. Two main forms of deism currently exist: classical deism and modern deism.

The concept of deism covers a wide variety of positions on a wide variety of religious issues. Following Sir Leslie Stephen's English Thought in the Eighteenth Century, most commentators[who?] agree that two features constituted the core of deism:

Critical elements of deist thought included:

• Rejection of all religions based on books that claim to contain the revealed word of God.
• Rejection of all religious dogma and demagogy.
• Rejection of reports of miracles, prophecies and religious "mysteries".

Constructive elements of deist thought included:

• God exists, created and governs the universe.
• God gave humans the ability to reason.

Deism is basically a belief that God Created everything, but, did not leave behind any particular Divine Revelation. They do not believe in any prophet or holy book.

Although the word Deism has only been coined relatively recently, in world history, the views of some religions about God, pretty much resemble this definition.

Eg: Confucianism.

Deists are people who believe in one God. A deist accepts the idea of God as creator of the universe. A deist, however, does not believe that God interferes with natural events.
