Romans 3:20 say's, "No one will be declared righteous in God's sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin" (NIV). Basically the purpose of the commandments is to reveal sin.

The first part of the verse clarifies that we cannot be made righteous through just obeying the law. So why did God give the Ten Commandments to the Israelites when He knew that no one could keep them perfectly? To show them that they needed a Savior to save them. You might see where this is going. That Savior is Jesus Christ. Verse 22 say's, "This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, all all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus."

So basically, God's purpose is to show that we are all sinners and need the saving grace of Jesus Christ through faith so that we may come back and restore a relationship with Him. Hopefully that helps!
