Torah and Haftorah
The haftorah is a section from the prophetic books recited in the synagogue. There are different explanations as to how the tradition of the haftorah came about, however, for the most part, they share a common theme with that day's Torah parsha. Please see the related link for more information.
1. Torah 2. Haftorah 3. Speech on Torah portion
In the normal case, the haftorah for a particular Shabbat is found after each Sedra (weekly portion) in the Chumash (printed book of the Torah) for that particular Shabbat. (Sometimes, it may be found at the end of the Chumash). However, often there are 'special' haftorot that take precedence over a given normal haftorah, such as when Rosh Chodesh occurs on Shabbat or on Sunday. There are also special haftorot around the time of Purim until Passover. Additionally, haftorot may sometimes vary depending on the community or the congregation. For instance, Ashenazim and Sefardim may sometimes may recite a different haftorah. Most of the time, these difference are noted in the chumash, but not always. Also, there are calendars and books printed that contain what haftorah is said on a particular Shabbat throughout the year. Assumedly, the information is also online. If you need to know for sure what haftorah is said in your congregation for a particular Shabbat, let's say for a Bar Mitzvah, the best is to check with the Rabbi.
