To start with a mandala is a diagram. After that the form ,purpose, construction, shape and many other factors depends on the people constructing it an whether they are Hindu, Buddhist and many other cultures.

Most cultures create mandalas that help focus the attention or thoughts of the observers. Each group has its own rituals and methods of construction,

As an example some Buddhist monks make intricate circular mandalas from coloured sand. As soon as it is finished the sand is swept up and allowed to flow into a natural stream to be dispersed. Other mandalas are carved in stone or printed on cloth.

The mandala has been used (cultural; appropriation) by artists T-shirt designers, modern new age groups and psychologists and councillors for alternate purposes
