The story of Noah is one of a family of ancient Near Eastern myths about the divine destruction of humanity, in which only one family is chosen to survive and repopulate the earth. God told Noah that he would bring a great flood to destroy all of humanity because of its sinfulness, and instructed him to build a great boat or Ark in which he and is family were to be saved. Noah took some of every living creature onto the Ark and then God made it rain for forty days. After the resulting Flood subsided and the Ark rested on Mount Ararat, Noah left the Ark and made a sacrifice to the Lord.
There are two, somewhat different stories of Noah's Flood in the Bible, that differ in details such as how many of each species were taken onto the Ark and how long the Flood lasted. The first story, attributed to the Priestly author, is Genesis 6:9-22, 7:6, 7:8-9, 7:11, 7:13-16a, 7:18-21, 7:24, 8:1-2a, 8:3b-5, 8:7, 8:13a, 8:14-19, 9:1-17. The second, attributed to the Yahwist, is in Genesis 6:5-8, 7:1-5, 7:7, 7:10, 7:12, 7:16b-17, 7:22-23, 8:2b-3a, 8:6, 8:8-12, 8:13b, 8:20-22.
