What is an amplified Bible?

The Amplified Bible is a translation that "attempts to take both word meaning and context into account in order to accurately translate the original text from one language into another".

The Amplified Bible does this through the use of alternate readings and multiple words as amplifications to assist the reader in understanding Scripture.

The multiple words and amplifications makes this cumbersome to read whole chapters at a time but is a great tool for bible study and understanding a given passage.

For comparison, here's the John 3:16 passage from the Amplified Bible and King James Version:

John 3:16 (Amplified Bible)

For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life.

John 3:16 (King James Version)

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
