In the very first Psalm there is a good example:

Psalm 1:1,2 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.

The truly blessed person is the one who steers clear of the lifestyle of the ungodly or takes advice from ungodly people. A happy person or blessed person is also a person who studies and contemplates God's word. This person has a hunger for the Word of God.

But the truth is a person cannot improve his or her self. It is only God's Spirit working in a person that can bring about real change

Php_2:13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

1Th_2:13 For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.
