chaos/khaos is the personification of the void that existed before the creation of the world. she's sometimes described as a mixture of the elements, from which everything was made, but it's more correct to say that she represents the 'nothing' that must exist before there can be 'something'. the 'formless void' the 'dark face of the waters' that genesis describes is pretty much what the Greeks meant by khaos. from her, all the primordial gods came into being.
