The mission of the Christian church is evangelization, but this mission is impeded by the division of the churches. A divided Christianity is a stumbling block to faith, and a scandal to the world.

Ecumenism requires first of all a conversion of heart, and a willingness to learn from the other through dialogue and an exchange of gifts. Its main feature is a spiritual ecumenism and genuine conversion. Its purpose is Christian unity.

All Christians are called to help heal the divisions of the church, so all Christians need to study ecumenism to know what we agree on, what the causes of division are, and what can be done to overcome them. We need to know what we, personally and locally, can do about it.
