This proverb draws from the experience of someone who had no riches then later on gained it. If you have the ability to give, that means, you have more than enough on your hands. You also have the means to procure what you want that you would not wish someone to give you anything. By this proverb, it also meant that the giver lacks nothing but instead his cup overflows that he can amiably give it.

Such absence of want or need is a desirable position, thus this proverb.

It is better to give because we recognize then how much we have and how many blessings we already have. In giving, we can share our blessings with others who do not have as much.

There are times in which we can receive-- but we should not develop an attitude of entitlement.

It feels better to receive, but that at best leaves the receiver as he/she was, without improvement. On the other hand, when we give, we are exercising the (spiritual) muscles of the soul and strengthening our character.
