Khatna, or Khitan is the rite of circumcision. According to tradition Muhammad was born without a foreskin. Whether that was true or not, most Arabian tribes were already practicing circumcision, including pagans, Jewish tribes, and Christians. Like in other faiths of that day, cleanliness and purity were considered virtues, and so was self-denial. There were also the Old Testament writings to, and Muslims consider themselves a part of the Abrahamic covenant, and Abraham was supposedly given the rite of circumcision from God.
