The Mehrab is the location of which that the Imam (leader of prayer) prays in and the rest of Ma'momeen (worshipers) are behind him.

Usually its a curved shape as the main purpose of it -else than to designate the area of the Imam to pray in- is to allow the voice of the imam to reach all the way back to the end of the mosque -no Microphones back then- the same concept of the dome, curve the sounds and allow them to reach long distances.

The Islamic architecture is one of the most "calculated" and complex designs.
