In biblical times, a talent was a form of money. However, parables are used to teach a deeper message than what was initially presented.
The talents as money could be interpreted as any gift God has given us. The focus is not so much the number of gifts, we have, but rather, what we do with what we are given. Are we grateful? Do we strive to learn and improve ourselves? Do we take what we have been given, and bury it, never to be used or thought of until the Savior returns? Or do we use those gifts to bless and inspire others?
Talents could also be interpreted as physical talents. Some people have talents in music, some in speech, some in being a good listener and a friend. Some talents may be in the sciences or math. Accounting may be a talent of some, and sales may be a talent of others.
What do you do with the talents you have been given, and do you actively seek to gain more? The only things we take with us after death to the next life is what we know, and who we are. Who we are has a lot to do with what we learn while we are here.
