It is a passage asking God to provide for the needs of the supplicant for that day. Bread being metaphorical for the things man needs to survive. The idea is that it is by God's generosity and sufferance that any good or needful things happen.

The Bible speaks dually about "bread," in that it is the physical sustenance of the mortal body to keep it alive temporarily... as well as the spiritual sustenance of God's Word, by which man shall live forever.

"...It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." (Matt.4:4)

The Bible is "Spiritual Bread." It is the Words of Jesus Christ, the Living Bread.

"...Jesus said unto them, I am the Bread of Life: he that cometh to Me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on Me shall never thirst." (John 6:35)

"Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me." (John 5:39)

Jesus' prayer outline is instruction on how we should pray and for what to pray. This line in Matthew 6:11, is a call to recognize who is our provider. It's a call to understand our utter dependence upon our Creator for our next breath... for the next beat of our heart... and our daily ration of temporary food to sustain us for one more day.

But in the spiritual sense, which Jesus came to illuminate in the hearts of some... this call for our daily bread is a daily plea to the Father to grant us one more morsel of His Truth... His Word... His Bread: the True Divinely revealed Source of wisdom, knowledge and understanding.

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the Holy (which is revealed to us in the Bible) is understanding." (Prov.9:10)

To, with a humble and trembling heart, chew on God's Living Bread, daily... to, fearfully, digest God's Living Bread, daily... incorporates God's Truth into the core of our heart, our mind, our intellect, our spirit... just as physical bread is assimilated by the physical body and becomes what we are, physically. It is a daily step toward one's spiritual growth and development in His Wisdom, Knowledge and Understanding. It's one's daily nourishment... and the exercise thereof... that builds righteous, Godly character.

'Give us this day our daily Bread' is a plea to the Father for a nourishing helping of Eternal Life through Jesus Christ.

The bread of God is his Son Jesus, and so God gives us our daily bread; as the Bible says:

John 6.33. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

34. Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

35. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

The Life-giving Bread of God is His WORD [Jesus Christ]. And the inspired books of the Bible are "the Words of Jesus Christ."

The "Daily Bread" of God is a "daily read" of the Bible. It's a daily renewal of the spirit.

"...be renewed in the spirit of your mind..." (Eph.4:23).

That "daily" renewal is achieved through continuous prayer... and a daily intake of God's Bread; the Words of Jesus Christ -- the Bible. It's God's "Truth" [John 17:17], that feeds and nourishes the spirit with God's Wisdom, Knowledge and Understanding that the world is unable to perceive.

"...Let thine heart retain My Words: Keep My Commandments, and Live. Get Wisdom, get Understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the Words of My mouth... Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get Wisdom: and with all thy getting get Understanding." (Prov.4:4-7)

"The FEAR OF THE LORD is the beginning [foundation] of WISDOM: and the Knowledge of the Holy [found in the written Word of God] is UNDERSTANDING." (Prov.9:10)
