What is the Hindu view of the purpose of life?

There are many ways to answer this question. Different Hindu's have their own ways on their approach to life. One way, is to follow the principles of Dharma. Dharma is the doctrine to living life the "right" way. Dharma is one's duty to ones self and others. One should have good Karma [right actions] as well.

It is supposed that the purpose of life in Hinduism is to attain Moksha.

However, Hinduism is a holistic religion. It has no code of conduct. Therefore, in Hinduism there is no single purpose in life. The purpose of life depends on the situation we are in and thus keeps changing continuously.

The seven basic purposes of life in Hinduism:

There are seven basic Hindu gods viz. Indra, Shakti, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Shani and Yama.

Each of them would make the purpose of life different. We select the right god depending on the magnitude of our difficulties

1. Chaotic life - hibernate in a dream world through Indra

2. Less hostile life - live in an illusory world through the Shakti

3. Tolerable life - start a new life through Brahma

4. Normal life - maintain status quo through the Vishnu

5. Comfortable life - make a determined effort to come up in life through Shiva

6. Extremely comfortable life - increase status through Shani

7. Ideally life - lead a wanton life through Yama

When life is extremely chaotic the purpose would be to attain Moksha and thus become immune to chaos in life. Thus, attaining Moksha is the last resort of a Hindu.

The more desirable purpose of life in Hinduism:

1. Indra and Yama are supposed to play a role after our death only. This means that hibernating in a dream world or leading a wanton life are no more the permitted purposes of life in Hinduism, as they are considered too risky.

2. Even leading an illusory life or changing status often are considered quite risky.

3. Starting new ways of life often too makes life fluctuating.

Thus the purpose of life in Hinduism is either to maintain status quo or progress when there are is an opportunity.
