The family is core to the Hindu culture. Each family member is included in all cultural events and festivals. The family consists of firstly the immediate family, then the extended family (cousins, aunts, uncles), then the members of their particular village/town. So large festivals would include the entire village. They try to show respect to all members of the family including children and old people by doing things to please them. People in large cities tend to be more secular and more individualistic but nevertheless as the culture is all around them, they will try to observe the tenets of their religion as far as they can.

Basically people are very religious and how their religion affects them will depend on their Guru or the particular school that they follow. It will affect what they eat (vegetarian, non-vegetarian), what they drink (alcohol, non-drinker), to whom they pray (a particular deity/god is the norm). They may also follow certain rituals such as when they can wash their hair or when they are allowed to do their washing. They will probably celebrate certain festivals throughout the year depending on where they live and what sect they come from. In addition, on certain holidays/religious days they may make a pilgrimage to a holy place. In additon, certain individuals may wish to fast on a particular day of the week or for a particular reason (for example, a mother may fast during her daughters studies to encourage her to do well).
