1 Samuel is up until the death of Saul, while David's kingship has yet to be firmly established; and 2 Samuel is after the death of Saul, when David gradually takes the helm of all twelve Israelite tribes. That is the only difference, since the original crowning (anointing) of David, and (later) Samuel's death, are well before the end of 1 Samuel.
