Ffawydden is the modern Welsh word for the Beech. It is attested to in the Cad Goddeu (The Battle of Trees), an ancient poem first recorded in the 14th century:

Tarw trinteryn byt.

Morawc a moryt.

Ffawyd ffynyessit.

battle-bull, king of the world

on sea and estuary

the beech excelled
