The 'essence', or 'basic nature' of 'everlasting life' is just that. Life that does not end. Everlasting life...without death. It is what we humans were originally created to enjoy.
Before Adam and Eve's sin, they were PERFECT, created to physically live forever on earth. There was no sickness or death on earth. (Genesis 1:27,28,31)(Genesis 2:16&17).
Sin brought sickness and death to the human family. ( 1 Corinthians 15:56) )(Matthew 9:2-7). For this very reason, we ALL get sick, grow old and die, and we no longer have eternal life.
Because of our original parents' sin, any of their descendants have 'inherited' sin, clear down to our day. (Romans 3:23) (Think of it like a dented pie plate. If the plate is dented, every pie that comes out will also have that dent. We humans have the 'dent' of sin, from the time we're born.) We can't help it.(Romans 5:12) We all make mistakes and endure problems because of this inheritance, but REMAINING like this, is OUR choice.
God arranged for a rescuer. He supplied his PERFECT son, to die for our sins.(1 Corinthians 15:3) (1 Corinthians 15:22)(John 3:16)(Romans 6:23)(Matthew 20:28). He effectively 'replaced' Adam as our 'original father'. We now have a choice...follow our original sinful father, Adam, or follow our new 'father', Jesus. If we OBEY Jesus' commands and recognize him as God's son and our savior, we have the hope of someday, once again, enjoying LITERAL eternal life.(John 17:3)
In the meantime, if we should die a 'natural' death (that is, Adamic death…death brought about by imperfection caused by Adam's sin), belief in and obedience to Jesus provides a resurrection from the dead, at an appointed time in the future.(Acts 24:15)(John 5:28)(John 11:25)
Jesus was the 'ransom sacrifice'…he 'ransomed' us and bought us back, providing a way for God's original purpose to be fulfilled and giving us a hope for eternal life in the future. (Romans 7:14-25) AT that time on earth, as in the beginning, there will be NO MORE DEATH. (Revelation 21:4)(Psalms 37:10,11,29)
One of the most significant scriptures for Easter is from the Bible, in the book of John 3:16, which states, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." This verse captures the essence of Easter, highlighting the sacrifice of Jesus and the promise of eternal life through belief in him.
