What is the feast day of the Immaculate Concepcion?

The feast of the Immaculate Conception is the feast day and Catholic holy day of obligation which celebrates the conception of the Blessed Mother of God. Normally this is celebrated on December 8th. It is not the conception of Jesus Christ, but the conception of Mary, free from sin since the moment of her conception.

It celebrates the belief that the Virgin Mary was herself conceived without original sin. This is a belief that has been held by Catholics and Orthodox for many centuries but was only finally defined by the Vatican in 1854. It is rejected by most Protestants although Martin Luther did believe in it.

The Immaculate Conception of Mary is commonly confused with the doctrine of the Virgin Birth of Jesus but this is a mistake arising from the misconception that sex is in some way unclean and therefore 'not immaculate'. The doctrine of the Virgin Birth exists because of the belief that the Holy Spirit is Christ's father and not Mary's husband, St Joseph and has nothing directly to do with Mary's own conception.
