What is the importance of the death of Jesus on the cross?

His death allowed all of us, man and women, to go to heaven. Without his death, we would all be going to hell instead. He saved us all and gave us the chance to live forever happily in heaven.

Given that God himself has said that "The wages of sin is death", that means that death (or mortality) is a direct result of sin. Since Jesus was the only sinless man who ever lived, and he died, the sin had to be there. Since "sin" is not limited to one per person, this means that the sins of everyone who will let them go can be taken from them and placed on Jesus at that point of death.

There must be justice, as God is just. Yet there is also mercy, as God is merciful. The wages of sin is death, but with a humble sacrifice a man may atone for his sins and be free. This one perfect sacrifice can take the sins of all of man, leaving each person the greatest gift of all, free for the taking: Life.
