Judges were used by God before Israel had Kings to serve as mediators of the Law covenant that God gave to the Israelits. The first one was Moses who judged Israel for 40 years. After Joshua died, a period of Judges began which lasted 300 years.
Some Judges were well known and some were women. They were from various tribes of Israel.
