The story of Genesis is the history of the world, its 6 day creation sequence, Adam and Eve, The first sin of eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge, expulsion from Eden, Noah and the great flood, the tower of babel, Sodom and Gomorrah, the birth and history of the patriarchs and their descendants up to their time in Egypt, and a whole bunch of stuff in between.

The main theme of the Book of Genesis is as it's name means is the origin or the beginning of something. In this case the origin of God's creation. It is also called the first Book of the law of Moses.

In the case of Genesis, it is the renewal of the already present planet Earth and the origins of physical life as we know it today. It begins by speaking via 'this is the generation' or in the Hebrew 'toledoth' with God telling the recap story of His Creation in Genesis 1 then Adam telling from his perspective beginning in verse 2:4, etc. It speaks of the whole of mankind until Genesis 10 when it concentrates of the line from Abram to Isaac to Jacob (Israel) and their subsequent history of physical Israel.
