Many today call 1 John 5:7-8 a spurious reference to the trinity. These state that some Bible translators of centuries past were so zealous to find some support for their belief in the Trinity concept in the Scriptures that they literally added it.
It is ironic to note that even these added words does not by itself proclaim the Trinity doctrine. It merely mentions/presents Father, Word, and Holy Spirit as witnesses. It shows no 'personhood' of all three since verse 7 shows inanimate water and blood serving as such.
Finally, the word Trinity did not come into common use as a religious term until after the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. This is several centuries after the New Testament was completed therefore, the term/doctrine is not a biblical concept but one of mans.
