The Episcopal Bishop's hat is called a miter. It is the same hat, miter, that a Roman Catholic Bishop wears.

Along with the staff he carries, the miter symbolizes the Bishop's authority and position within the church. Otherwise, he (or she) is just a normal everyday person. Bishops do not wear the miter unless in preparation for official church business.
