Pope Benedict XVI was born in the Bavarian town of Marktl am Inn in southwestern Germany. His name before becoming Pope was Joseph Alois Ratzinger.

He has held Dual Citizenship of both Germany and the Vatican City State since at least 1981 when he became the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, but was eligible for dual citizenship since becoming a Cardinal in 1977.
Joseph Ratzinger, otherwise known as Pope Benedict XVI, was originally born in Bavaria which means his nationality is Bavarian. However, he announced his resignation as Pope on February 11th, 2013 so he no longer carries that title.
