I just happened to be reading 1 Samuel 22 and in verse 19 it says that Doeg "killed on that day eighty-five persons who wore the linen ephod." (ESV) The context of the passage tells of Saul having the priest slaughtered for helping David so the 85 people are clearly priests. I think it is quite possible that the phrase originates from thinking of the priestly garments.
